In 1878, he made his debut for Sussex in a first-class match against Kent at the Higher Common Ground, Tunbridge Wells.〔 Sussex won the toss and elected to bat, making 149 all out, during which Goldsmith was dismissed for 3 runs by Charles Cunliffe. Kent responded in their first-innings by making 243 all out with Goldsmith opening the bowling and taking the wicket of Charlie Absolom to finish with figures of 1/38 from eighteen overs. Sussex responded in their second-innings by making just 58 all out, with Goldsmith ending the innings not out without scoring. Kent won the match by an innings and 36 runs.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Kent v Sussex, 1878 )〕 He made a second first-class appearance for Sussex in 1879 against the same opposition, this time at the County Ground, Hove.〔 Kent won the toss and elected to bat first, making 120 all out, during which Goldsmith bowled three wicketless overs which conceded 8 runs. Sussex were then dismissed for just 60 in their first-innings, with Goldsmith ending the innings unbeaten without scoring. Kent then made 96 all out in their second-innings, with him bowling ten wicketless overs which conceded 14 runs.
